In a multi-product tanker, different cargos have varying compositions, odors, and chemical properties, and even tiny residues can alter the next product, create safety or regulatory problems, or affect quality. A thorough purge removes remaining cargo residues and vapors from the tank, ullage spaces, and piping and often uses inert gas or other purge media to minimize any residual flammable atmosphere while ensuring the tank is clean enough for the next cargo.
